Trayvon Martin supporters, many dressed in hoodies, are demonstrating their anger at the acquittal of George Zimmerman through mostly peaceful protests from coast to coast.

About 200 people marched down Mission Street in San Francisco on Saturday night at 8 p.m. local time (11 p.m. ET) carrying yellow signs that said ?the whole system is racist? and ?the people say guilty,? NBCBayArea.com reported.

MSNBC's Craig Melvin reports from outside the Sanford court house, which has been peaceful with the exception of some chants of "no justice, no peace" and "the system failed us." Aerial footage in San Francisco shows a march seemingly in protest of the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial

A large protest in New York is was scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday in Union Square and there are dozens of other protests planned around the country throughout the day.

Saturday night?s march in San Francisco dispersed peacefully a little after 10 p.m. local time (1 a.m. ET), but a similar protest in downtown Oakland ended with numerous buildings and cars being vandalized and protesters setting random fires, NBCBayArea.com reported.

The verdict also sparked protests in Los Angeles, where police said about 200 demonstrators gathered in Leimert Park, the AP said.

The Sacramento Bee reported that protesters in the California capital chanted: "What do we want? Justice. When do you we want it? Now. For who? Trayvon."

Local churches across the country were also organizing rallies and urging supporters to wear hoodies in honor of Martin, who was wearing a black hoodie when Zimmerman shot him in the chest on Feb. 26, 2012.

George Zimmerman has sued NBC Universal for defamation. The company strongly denies the allegation.

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? After a year and a half of living as a hermit, George Zimmerman emerged from a Florida courthouse a free man, cleared of all charges in the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

His brother said the former neighborhood watch volunteer was still processing the reality that he wouldn't serve prison time for the killing, which Zimmerman, 29, has maintained was an act of self-defense. Late Saturday night, a jury found him not guilty of second-degree murder and declined to convict him on a lesser charge of manslaughter.

However, with many critics angry over his acquittal, his freedom may be limited.

"He's going to be looking over his shoulder the rest of his life," Robert Zimmerman Jr. said during an interview on CNN.

Demonstrators upset with the verdict protested mostly peacefully in Florida, Milwaukee, Washington, Atlanta and other cities overnight and into the early morning Sunday, but some broke windows and vandalized a police squad car in Oakland during protests in four California cities, authorities said. Additional demonstrations were scheduled across the country through Sunday evening.

Churches also made note of the verdict Sunday morning, with many leaders speaking about the case and urging peace in the aftermath. Some congregants wore hooded sweatshirts, as Martin had when he died, or shirts with the teen's picture.

Martin's killing in February 2012 unleashed debate across the U.S. over racial profiling, self-defense and equal justice. Protesters nationwide lashed out against police in the Orlando suburb of Sanford as it took 44 days for Zimmerman to be arrested. Many, including Martin's parents, said Zimmerman had racially profiled the unarmed black teen. Zimmerman identifies himself as Hispanic.

Six anonymous female jurors considered nearly three weeks of often wildly conflicting testimony over who was the aggressor on the rainy night the 17-year-old was shot while walking through the gated townhouse community where he was staying and where Zimmerman lived.

Jurors were sequestered during the trial, and they deliberated more than 15 hours over two days before announcing late Saturday night that they had reached a verdict. The court did not release the racial and ethnic makeup of the jury, but the panel appeared to reporters covering selection to be made up of five white women and a sixth who may be Hispanic.

In August 2012, defense attorney Mark O'Mara said Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, had been living like hermits and weren't working because they feared for their safety.

After Saturday's verdict, police, officials and civil rights leaders urged peace and told protesters not to resort to violence. While defense attorneys said they were thrilled with the outcome, O'Mara suggested Zimmerman's safety would be an ongoing concern.

"There still is a fringe element that wants revenge," O'Mara said. "They won't listen to a verdict of not guilty."

Those watching reacted strongly when the verdict was announced. Martin's mother and father were not in the courtroom when it was read; supporters of his family who had gathered outside yelled "No! No!" upon learning of the verdict.

Andrew Perkins, 55, a black resident of Sanford, angrily asked outside the courthouse: "How the hell did they find him not guilty?"

"He killed somebody and got away with murder," Perkins shouted, so angry he shook, looking toward the courthouse.

Trayvon Martin's brother, Jahvaris Fulton, said on Twitter: "Et tu America?" ? a reference to the Latin phrase "Et tu, Brute?" known as an expression of betrayal.

In a Sunday afternoon statement, President Barack Obama called Martin's death a tragedy for America but asked that Americans respect calls for calm reflection.

"I know this case has elicited strong passions," he said. "And in the wake of the verdict, I know those passions may be running even higher. But we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken."

The statement reflected the widespread national attention of the case. The White House rarely issues formal responses to trials that do not directly involve the president or federal government.

Obama said the verdict should prompt a discussion on gun violence, but it's unlikely he will use the trial as a way to restart his legislative push for stricter gun control laws. The measures he sought after the December school massacre in Newtown, Conn., failed to pass the Senate.

NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous started a petition calling for the Justice Department to open a civil rights case against Zimmerman. "The most fundamental of civil rights ? the right to life ? was violated the night George Zimmerman stalked and then took the life of Trayvon Martin," Jealous wrote in the petition, posted on the website MoveOn.org and addressed to Attorney General Eric Holder.

Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump acknowledged the disappointment of Trayvon Martin's supporters, ranking the teen alongside civil rights heroes Medgar Evers and Emmett Till in the history of the fight for equal justice. However, Crump said, "for Trayvon to rest in peace, we must all be peaceful."

Martin's family maintained the teen was not the aggressor, and prosecutors suggested Martin was scared because he was being followed by a stranger. Defense attorneys, however, said Martin knocked Zimmerman down and was slamming the older man's head against the concrete sidewalk when Zimmerman fired his gun.

Prosecutors called Zimmerman a liar and portrayed him as a "wannabe cop" vigilante who had grown frustrated by break-ins in his neighborhood committed primarily by young black men. Zimmerman assumed Martin was up to no good and took the law into his own hands, prosecutors said.

State Attorney Angela Corey said after the verdict that she believed second-degree murder was the appropriate charge because Zimmerman's mindset "fit the bill of second-degree murder."

"We charged what we believed we could prove," Corey said.

Zimmerman also had some supporters outside the courthouse, including Cindy Lenzen, 50, of Casslebury, and her brother, 52-year-old Chris Bay, who stood watching others chant slogans such as, "the whole system's guilty."

Lenzen and Bay ? who are white ? called the entire case "a tragedy," especially for Zimmerman.

"It's a tragedy that he's going to suffer for the rest of his life," Bay said. "No one wins either way. This is going to be a recurring nightmare in his mind every night."

Before a special prosecutor assigned to the case ordered Zimmerman's arrest, thousands of protesters had gathered in Sanford, Miami, New York and elsewhere, many wearing hoodies like the one Martin had on the night he died. They also carried Skittles and a can of iced tea, items Martin had in his pocket. Obama also had weighed in, saying that if he had a son, "he'd look like Trayvon."

Despite the racially charged nature of the case, race was barely mentioned at the trial.

"This case has never been about race or the right to bear arms," Corey said. "We believe this case all along was about boundaries, and George Zimmerman exceeded those boundaries."

One of the few mentions of race came from witness Rachel Jeantel, the Miami teen who was talking to Martin by phone moments before he was shot. She testified that he described being followed by a "creepy-ass cracker" as he walked through the neighborhood.

Jeantel gave some of the trial's most riveting testimony. She said she overheard Martin demand, "What are you following me for?" and then yell, "Get off! Get off!" before his cellphone went dead.

The jurors had to sort out clashing testimony from 56 witnesses in all, including police, neighbors, friends and family members.

If Gary C. Payne ("Ignore protesters, enjoy the circus," letter, July 12,) has the July 12 Eagle, I suggest he turn to the sports page on C8 and read the article about the euthanized steer at the Calgary Stampede. This might provide him with some insight into the protesters? motives.

IFDS facing bankruptcy after British London 2012 penalty appeal, warns President

By Gary Anderson

July 14 -?john twomey1International Association for Disabled Sailing (IFDS) President John Twomey?says his organisation is facing bankruptcy due to the legal costs incurred when the British Sonar team?appealed the awarding of a penalty, which cost them a bronze medal at London 2012.

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) submitted an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in September last year, following the ISDF's decision to hand John Robertson, Stephen Thomas and Hannah Stodel a discretionary four-point penalty when bosun Simon Hiscocks cleaned the port side of the keel after being authorised to lift the boat out of the water to inspect some damage.

The Lausanne based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) met in London in April and upheld the IFDS's original decision to penalise the British team, ruling that it did not have the legal jurisdiction to alter the IFDS's decision due to technicalities regarding the rules which govern sailing in the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) handbook.

Following the decision, the British team, who finished sixth at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, dropped to fifth, allowing the Norwegian trio of Aleksander Wang-Hansen, Marie Solberg and Per Eugen Kristiansen to move up into the bronze medal position.

In its ruling, CAS, which published the report in June, ordered the British Paralympic Association (BPA) to pay the full costs of the arbitration but that each party must pay its own legal fees and costs.

Speaking to insidethegames, Twomey (pictured top) of Ireland, who also competed in his tenth Paralympics at London 2012 also in the Sonar event, says that the court's decision to force each party to pay their own legal costs is having a major impact on the future of the IFDS?and the organisation is seeking assistance from third parties to meet the financial burden.

"We are a very small organisation in financial terms and our income comes from our registered national authorities in the form of an annual fee, and we are not really geared up for major legal outlays," he said.

"The fact that the arbitrator let the legal costs lie with the parties obviously caused us a great deal of difficulty, and we just have to get some third party support to pay those legal fees.

"If we can't get outside assistance then obviously it [bankruptcy] would be a consequence.

"We are going to explore all opportunities and avenues to see where we can raise this money."

Twomey, who took over the Presidency of the IFDS?in November last year to replace Linda Merkle, revealed that he has made contact with the IPC to see if it can provide any support and that "positive" discussions have been taking place with the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) since early this year on the possibility of financial assistance or even a merger between the two organisations.

"We are appealing to everybody really," said the 57-year-old.

"We're basically trying to see where we can get assistance to pay these fees.

"We have been in discussions with ISAF since early in the year with regards to merging the two organisations, so that you would have a one-stop-shop for sailing worldwide.

"Our sailors are all ISAF members anyway and we sail under the ISAF rules, so we are looking at that possibility to see if there is a framework where we could merge IFDS?into ISAF.

"Both sides are coming to the table with an open mind, and everybody is there for the benefit of sailing and not for self gain so that is a great way to have any discussions."

The Seoul 1988 discus gold medallist indicated that the deadline for raising funds to compensate the IFDS' legal representatives is September.

"Our legal people have been very fair with us,"?Twomey said.

"They have charged us the bare minimum and a lot of the work was done voluntarily.

"We have spoken to our legal people and we have said that we hope to be sitting down with them in early September to discuss how we will discharge the fees.

"Our tentative deadline is September."

John Twomey 2John Twomey?has competed in 10 Paralympic Games since Toronto 1976

The RYA said that it would welcome the merger of the IFDS and ISAF which would afford Paralympians the same level and standard of resources as Olympic competitors.

However, it pointed out that CAS' decision to rule that each side meet its own legal costs indicated that they had solid grounds to lodge the initial appeal.

"The amount of the legal costs incurred by IFDS?in relation to this case is entirely a matter between IFDS?and the US attorneys it appointed to act on its behalf," a spokesperson told insidethegames.

"The reasons why the arbitrator decided that each party should bear its own legal costs are set out in his award, which will be published by CAS in due course, but suffice to say if the arbitrator felt the case was frivolous then in all probability he would have apportioned costs differently."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the BPA, said: "We stand by our decision to take the matter of the penalty given to the British Sonar boat during the London 2012 Paralympic Games to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

"We respect the decision that the arbitrator made that, having thoroughly reviewed all the evidence presented, the International Jury's decision must stand, determining that the matter concerned 'sport technical rules' which, according to the International Paralympic Committee Eligibility Code, are unable to be reviewed by CAS.

"We are not in a position to comment on the financial implications of this ruling for any of the parties involved."

Why You Should Play Bad Video Games - Kotaku

I still remember the first bad game that really burned me.

The year was 2002. I was wearing out my copy of Dead or Alive 3 on the Xbox, and Jann Lee was my combatant of choice. I was a huge martial arts movie fan, and Lee?s silky-smooth combinations, flowing mannerisms and high-pitched shouts were spot-on. This game made me feel the way it should feel to play as a certain legendary martial artist with whom my character shared a last name.

I fell in love with that experience, so when an actual Bruce Lee game ? Quest of the Dragon ? launched, I had to have it. Visions danced in my head of controlling a character who was as fast and as fluid against multiple assailants as Jann Lee. What could possibly be better than Jeet Kune Do in an action-adventure brawler?

Turns out, pretty much everything on the Xbox could be and was better. Quest of the Dragon is an abomination. Enemies were boring and repetitive, combat broke down to spamming the same couple of combos, the graphics were substandard, and the controls, which should have let me massacre foes with the same beautiful violence that Jann Lee employed in DoA, were unresponsive to the point of being game-breaking.

I was heartbroken, but more importantly, I was pissed. I had just blown $50 on one of the worst games of that generation, and when I finally beat Quest of the Dragon, it was done mostly out of spite. It had taken my money, so damnit, I was going to get my money?s worth.

Perspective is a funny thing, because I look back now and I feel fortunate ? yes, fortunate ? for having played Quest of the Dragon. You see, I hadn?t thought much about that game until I picked up Sleeping Dogs last year, snapped off my first combo as Wei Shen, and marveled at how good it was. This was what a martial arts brawler should feel like, and as I tore through the game, I loved it more and more because it wasn?t Quest of the Dragon.

Playing that terrible Xbox game gave me the baseline for everything a game could do wrong, and that perspective made me appreciate everything that Sleeping Dogs did right. In fact, I?ve started playing some of the worst titles available just to gain an appreciation for the quality of well-made games.

You should too.

The truth is, most gamers today rely on a steady diet of AAA titles to feed their video game appetites, and unless you have an unlimited budget, buying the wrong $60 game can be a significant hit to your allotted gaming fund. This is an expensive hobby, and that?s why video game reviews are taken far more seriously than movie reviews, and that's why keyboard scud missiles are aimed at any reviewer suspected of being biased or unfair.

It isn?t until you play a game that does the little things wrong that you appreciate the ones that do them right.

An odd thing happens when you?re only eating top-shelf steak; you start to lose taste of what makes it special in the first place.

I see this a lot with series that are on regular release cycles like Call of Duty or Halo, or when franchises like Devil May Cry move in a new direction. You can dismiss it as trolling or fanboy ranting, but I?ve heard ?that game sucks? in reference to good games from plenty of real, intelligent people who I know personally. Simply put, they?re wrong.

Take Call of Duty. The plots might be contrived and the set pieces predictable, but nothing about Call of Duty on a fundamental level sucks. You want a first-person shooter that actually sucks? Play Darkest of Days, a mess of an FPS with invisible walls, glitchy aiming, glitchier enemies, and a preposterous time-travel plot. That came out the same year as Modern Warfare 2. Play it, and then try to tell me with a straight face that Call of Duty sucks. It?s impossible.

If you only play a few games all year, I can see how your perspective gets skewed. If you only bought Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, Halo 4 and Black Ops II last year, one of those games is going to be your least favorite, probably by a big margin, and it?s easy to say that your least-favorite game sucks by comparison. Little details that make a quality game so special like tight controls, reliable and consistent hit detection and physics, intelligent AI, lighting, and draw distance get taken for granted, because most quality games do those things well to begin with. It isn?t until you play a game that does the little things wrong that you appreciate the ones that do them right.

I am a big advocate of playing terrible games for the aforementioned reasons, but I understand that you might be skeptical and wondering why you should waste time and money on a substandard product. Bear with me.

My proposal: On the weekend before the release of a game that you are really looking forward to, pick up a terrible game in the same genre and revel in how awful it is.

Gamestop has a fantastic used games return policy where you can return a used game with a receipt within seven days of purchase for a full refund, and since bad games tend to sell poorly, they can usually be found used for a few dollars apiece. This serves our purpose perfectly.

As far as why you should invest the time, think of it as cleansing your palate with water in between drinking fine wines. You?re shocking your system, washing away the expectations of the last great game you played before starting the next great game anew.

My proposal: on the weekend before the release of a game that you are really looking forward to, pick up a terrible game in the same genre and revel in how awful it is, much in the same way you?d watch a terrible movie. Excited for WWE 2K14 this October? Throw in Lucha Libre AAA Heroes del Ring for a few hours of sluggish wrestling and limited match types. Stepping back into Sam Fisher?s boots in Splinter Cell: Blacklist? Pick up Naughty Bear for third-person action/stealth done wrong.

The best part is, there is almost always some fun to be had in a game, no matter its review score. After all, bad video games are the yin to good video games? yang; there is always a little bit of bad in the good, and a little bit of good in the bad. Darkest of Days lets you go Rambo with futuristic weapons on Civil War enemies, which is as ludicrous as it sounds. No game has made me laugh harder than Rock Revolution the first time I heard its unlicensed cover of ?Chop Suey,? which is a testament to all that is suck. And Quest of the Dragon? Well?. At least it has Bruce Lee on the cover.

Seeking out bad games goes against everything we learn as consumers and gamers, but try it before you judge it. I promise that your gaming experience will be better for it.

Surrey university student Hugh Podmore launches viral apartment ad

Former Southridge School student Hugh Podmore has become an Internet celebrity, after his Craigslist ad and online apartment hunt landed him on the front page of Reddit Toronto.

Podmore posted an ad saying he was moving from Montreal (where he was at McGill University) to Toronto (to York University) and he needed a place to stay ? and a roommate. He posted a slideshow on photo sharing site Imgur, a sort of top-down comic strip that detailed his love for cooking (but not vegetarian cooking), the Harry Potter game of Quidditch (he even showed off his McGill Quidditch club t-shirt), J.R.R. Tolkien, the (quietly played) Guitar, and Kite Surfing.

The Imgur slideshow already has over 57,500 views.

His Craiglist ad was titled "Genteel Rapscallion of a Masters Student Seeking Interesting Roommates". The story has since been picked up by the CBC, the Huffington Post, and Canada.com (and here).

It appeared Podmore was close to finding himself from flatmates in T. Dot, but he then sent out an update saying someone else had nabbed up the space.

He's still on hunt and, in case you're reading this in Toronto and looking for a well-mannered and outgoing British Columbian, here's his slideshow:
